                                        LOCATION OF PODGORICA

You might not know that much about Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, since the city gained this status just four years ago, when the newest state of Europe appeared. This small yet fascinating country crosses a period of fast development and its wonderful capital is the main ground breaker in the whole process.

Podgorica is a city located on the banks of no less than six rivers. One quarter of Montenegro’s population live here, since this is the main city of the country. It is a city like many other European cities in the Balkans, with an impressive historical center but with communist  apartment  blocks all around the central area.

Due to the powerful Ottoman influence over the years, one can still observe the Turkish influence over the city. The largest part of the historical center is called Stara Vaors, meaning “the old Turkish town”. It’s rather rare to walk on those typical narrow and loopy Turkish streets somewhere in Europe. Sat-kula, the old Ottoman clock tower is the main landmark of Podgorica. The recent developments in the area gave  the old town that well known Mediterranean touch. In fact, this is what makes Podgorica so special – the Turkish inheritance and the communist remains, the new and modern architecture and the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Podgorica is also a great starting point in exploring the natural beauties of the country. The capital city of Montenegro is only 100 kilometers away from the seashore and from some of the newest resorts of the Adriatic Sea. One day excursions at the attractions nearby can also be booked through the local travel agencies. Scadar Lake – the largest lake of the Balkans, the ancient fortress of Meteon and the archaeological remains of the Roman city of Dukjla are just three of the one-day destinations around Podgorica.
